House & Garden
- April 2006
By Phillippa Chiefitz
The worldwide tapas trend has put a new twist on eating out. Think
informal, sociable dining where you get to taste delicious and
varied Mediterranean-inspired mouthfuls. Step inside Fork, restaurateurs
JD Haasbroek and Ed Saunders’ new tapas bar on Long Street.
As the name suggests, the fork is your only implement. To start,
succulent tiger prawns wrapped in crispy pancetta or spicy Moroccan
meatballs are a must. The grilled lamb cutlets with cumin and coriander
and kudu mini fillets with orange potato puree and chilli spinach
get full marks. Or just order a simple platter of salami, prosciutto,
cheese and ciabatta to dip in a balsamic glaze. The décor
is brasserie style with exposed brick walls, moody lighting and
smoky mirrors.
